The Experience

The animals (pigs, cows, chickens, ducks, geese) need to be looked after daily, new paddocks for the pigs need to be prepared every couple of weeks, plants need to be watered, transplanted, pruned, weeded, harvested, etc, depending on the time of the year. During harvest time there will be canning, fermenting and other food storage tasks to do. Also clearing junk and building things. Mucky activities, you will get dirty!

It was a pleasure to work with Elizabeth and her family. Very welcoming and kind. The work was enjoyable and I learnt a lot - lot of gardening and a couple odd jobs. Often you could make your own schedule and take off good weather days to get the best experience of the island. Got great recommendations on where to visit and they offered to drive us if they had the time free. The island is one of, if not the, prettiest place I have ever visited. A little rural but that's a benefit as it's very peaceful. The caravan is lovely too - right on the water! An amazing experience! Thank you!

I really enjoyed my time volunteering on the croft with Elisabeth and the family. They were warm, welcoming and went above and beyond in making my stay as comfortable as possible. Marcus was always down for a chat about life, the universe and everything inbetween. The work was always interesting and I learned a number of new skills that will come in handy for years to come. Days off were planned to align with good weather days so I could explore the Isle and the family was always happy to drop me off or pick me up from somewhere. They gave me great recommendations for hikes and days out.

Elizabeth was a good host, the men in the family were not. (And there's a lot of them) Received a lot of sexist and xenophobic comments, wouldn't recommend this experience to a female traveler.
